13-year-old Excelsior High student Kemelia Paul has died weeks after being injured during a family dispute in Bayshore Park, St. Andrew.

A 13-year-old Excelsior High School student who was critically injured during a family dispute in St. Andrew has died after spending weeks fighting for her life in the hospital.

Kemelia Paul passed away following injuries she sustained during an incident on May 9 in Bayshore Park, near Harbour View. Her death has left relatives, friends, and members of the wider community mourning the loss of a young life described as full of promise.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by her mother, Josephine Mitchell, who spoke through tears while struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

According to reports, Kemelia became caught in the middle of a domestic dispute that escalated inside a home. The teenager reportedly attempted to intervene during the confrontation and was seriously injured.

The incident is said to have stemmed from a conflict involving Kemelia's cousin and the father of her cousin's child.

Investigators allege that 29-year-old Kemar Mitchell arrived at the location despite being under a restraining order. Following the altercation, Kemelia was rushed to hospital, where doctors worked tirelessly to save her life.

Family members remained hopeful throughout her lengthy hospitalisation. Her mother spent weeks by her daughter's side at Kingston Public Hospital, seeking medical supplies and praying for her recovery as doctors battled to treat severe internal injuries.

Loved ones described Kemelia as a bright, cheerful, and ambitious young girl whose future was filled with potential. Her death has sparked an outpouring of grief from relatives, friends, classmates, and members of the community.

Following the incident, Kemar Mitchell turned himself in to police at the Kingston East Division on May 14.

Authorities have since upgraded the charges against him to murder following the teen's death. He was scheduled to appear before the court on Wednesday as the legal proceedings continue.

The tragedy has once again highlighted concerns surrounding domestic violence and the devastating impact family conflicts can have on innocent victims.
