Woman Dies After Mark X Mounts Sidewalk in Ocho Rios

A woman was killed after a speeding Toyota Mark X mounted a sidewalk in Ocho Rios and struck her before the driver fled the scene.

A tragic hit-and-run incident in Ocho Rios, St Ann, has left one woman dead after a speeding motorist reportedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed onto a sidewalk, striking her before fleeing the scene.

The victim has been identified as Claudette Thorpe, who was walking along Main Street shortly after 6:00 a.m. on Saturday when the fatal crash occurred.

According to reports from the Jamaica Constabulary Force Communications Network, a Toyota Mark X travelling at high speed veered off the roadway and mounted the sidewalk where Thorpe was walking.

The impact reportedly threw Thorpe onto the hood of the vehicle as it continued moving forward. The out-of-control car then slammed into a utility pole, splitting it in two before eventually coming to a stop.

Investigators say Thorpe was thrown several feet onto the roadway following the collision. The force of the impact reportedly left her clothing torn and caused severe injuries.

Surveillance cameras in the area captured the horrifying incident. Footage reportedly shows the moment the vehicle struck Thorpe as well as the driver exiting the damaged car and fleeing the scene on foot moments later.

Additional videos circulating online showed the heavily damaged Toyota Mark X, the broken utility pole, debris scattered across the roadway, and a crowd gathering at the scene.

Emergency responders rushed Thorpe to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Following the incident, police appealed to the driver to surrender to authorities. Senior Superintendent Carlos Russell, head of the St Ann Police Division, later confirmed that a relative brought the driver to the police station later that same day.

As of Monday morning, investigators had not announced any criminal charges, and the driver's identity had not been publicly released.

Detectives continue to examine surveillance footage and gather statements as part of the ongoing investigation.

The fatal crash adds to Jamaica's road safety concerns. Police statistics indicate that 125 people have lost their lives in 113 fatal crashes across the island since the start of the year.

Although road fatalities have reportedly decreased by 33.3 percent compared to the same period last year, authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution and obey traffic laws to prevent further tragedies.

The investigation remains ongoing.
