A tragic extreme sports accident in Brazil has gone viral worldwide after a 21-year-old woman lost her life during a rope-jumping activity when her safety rope was allegedly not secured before the jump.

The victim has been identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, who was participating in the activity at the Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as the "Skeleton Bridge," an abandoned railway bridge located in São Paulo, Brazil.

"Guys, The Rope!" Seconds Before Fatal Bridge Jump

A video circulating on social media captured the horrifying moments leading up to the tragedy. The footage reportedly shows Rodrigues de Freitas being escorted toward the edge of the bridge by several staff members before she was released.

Seconds before the jump, a witness can reportedly be heard shouting in alarm after noticing what appeared to be an unsecured rope lying on the ground.

"Guys, the rope!" the witness yelled.

Unfortunately, the warning came too late.

Rodrigues de Freitas reportedly plunged approximately 40 metres (130 feet) from the bridge. Emergency responders later confirmed that she died at the scene.

The shocking incident quickly sparked outrage online, with many viewers questioning how such a critical safety measure could have been overlooked.

According to Brazilian media reports, Rodrigues de Freitas had previously shared social media posts joking about extreme sports and asking who would be "crazy enough" to let her jump from a bridge.

Authorities launched an immediate investigation following the fatal incident.

Reports indicate that six individuals were questioned by police. Three men, ages 27, 32, and 42, have since been charged with homicide with implied malice.

Investigators believe the rope may not have been properly attached or inspected before the jump occurred. Police also confirmed that the activity was not officially authorised at the abandoned bridge location.

Officials from São Paulo's federal property agency stated they are cooperating fully with investigators as efforts continue to determine responsibility for the tragedy.

Meanwhile, local authorities have raised concerns about security and access to the bridge, arguing that previous warnings regarding the site had not been adequately addressed.

The City Hall of Limeira has announced plans to pursue legal action, claiming federal authorities failed to properly secure and monitor the abandoned structure despite repeated concerns.

The heartbreaking death of Rodrigues de Freitas has renewed discussions about safety standards within extreme sports activities and the importance of proper supervision and equipment checks.
