A rideshare driver in Trinidad escaped an armed robbery attempt after allegedly running over one of the suspects during a dramatic ambush.
A suspected armed robbery in Trinidad and Tobago took a dramatic turn after a rideshare driver allegedly ran over one of his attackers while attempting to escape an ambush.
The incident occurred on Saturday night in Port of Spain and was reportedly captured on the driver's dashboard camera, with footage now circulating widely across social media.
According to police reports, the driver accepted a ride request through a mobile transportation app at approximately 9:19 p.m. The request allegedly came from two women who requested pickup at Independence Square in Port of Spain.
Authorities say the trip appeared routine at first. However, during the journey, one of the passengers reportedly asked the driver to make a stop along Wharton Branch Road in Laventille, claiming she needed to collect an item.
When the vehicle arrived at the location, one of the women exited the car. Moments later, two men approached the vehicle.
Police say one of the men was armed with a firearm and immediately began demanding money from the driver.
Dashcam footage reportedly shows the tense encounter as the suspects attempted to carry out the robbery. Investigators say the armed suspect reached toward the vehicle while trying to confront the driver.
Instead of complying with the demands, the driver quickly reversed away from the scene in an apparent attempt to escape.
The situation escalated seconds later when the driver accelerated forward in the direction of the suspects.
During the confrontation, one of the alleged robbers reportedly fired a shot at the vehicle.
Both suspects attempted to flee, but one of them was struck by the vehicle during the chaos.
The female passenger who remained inside the car reportedly exited the vehicle shortly afterwards and fled the area on foot.
Several hours later, police arrested a 19-year-old suspect after he reportedly arrived at the Port of Spain General Hospital seeking medical treatment.
Authorities stated that the individual matched the description of one of the men involved in the attempted robbery.
The suspect, who resides in Laventille, was later taken into police custody for questioning.
Investigators have not yet disclosed whether formal charges have been filed.
Detectives attached to the Besson Street Criminal Investigations Department continue to investigate the incident.
The case comes amid increasing concerns about crimes targeting rideshare drivers throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
Law enforcement officials have recently urged drivers using transportation apps to remain vigilant, particularly when accepting late-night ride requests or travelling to unfamiliar areas.
The investigation remains ongoing.
